Les outils nécessaires sont de nature géométrique, algébrique, combinatoire, ou analytique. Certains problèmes conduisent à l'émergence de nouvelles structures mathématiques et requièrent une étude spécifique. D'autres possèdent des applications physiques immédiates.</p> <p>Les lois de la nature, au niveau classique, s'expriment naturellement en termes géométriques (la notion de connexion sur un espacé fibré, par exemple, apparaît aussi bien dans l'expression des lois de la gravitation que dans celle des interactions fortes ou électro-faibles), et les symétries de la physique sont décrites par des constructions relevant de la théorie des groupes, en particulier celle des représentations. Enfin, on sait bien que la mécanique elle-même utilise la géométrie, en particulier la géométrie symplectique, pour sa propre formulation. Au niveau quantique, tous ces concepts mathématiques doivent être généralisés. C'est ainsi que les approches de la gravitation quantique utilisant la géométrie non-commutative remplacent l'espace-temps (en fait l'algèbre des fonctions définie sur ce dernier) par une algèbre non-commutative, et de nombreux développements de la théorie quantique des champs utilisent des généralisation du concept de groupe : les théories super-symétriques utilisent les super-algèbres de Lie, et la théorie des champs conformes, comme celle des cordes ou des systèmes intégrables, utilise des concepts issus des algèbres affines et des groups quantiques. C'est sur ces thèmes que sont focalisées nos activités.</p></div>
