Cosmology

Group “Fundamental Interactions”

The Cosmology Team is comprised of researchers having an expertise in Cosmology, General Relativity, Quantum Field Theory and Particle Physics who collaborate and share contracts with several national and international groups of theoreticians, cosmologists, astronomers, astrophysicists and particle physicists.

Context of our researches. Flooded for over a decade with a massive quantity of high quality data, cosmology has finally become a fertile domain of research, the ideal ground where predictions from fundamental physics, particle physics and general relativity can be tested and falsified. This abundance of information has recently led to the discovery of phenomena and physical signals that were completely unexpected, such as the accelerated expansion of the universe, as well as phenomena that were expected since long, but undetected so far, such as gravitational waves.

The core of our activities is oriented along three main research axes:

  • Understanding the physics of the large scale structure of the universe by studying how the structures grow in different regimes using statistical tools. We want to gauge the contribution of the different forms of matter (standard and dark) and we aim at extracting the values of fundamental observables of the standard model of cosmology.
  • Unveiling the nature of dark energy by studying the rich phenomenology of the acceleration of the universe. The goal is to refine our knowledge of the dark sector of the universe either empirically, by exploring whether the standard description of gravity, the general theory of relativity, fails on large (infrared) cosmic scales, either theoretically, by exploring which non-standard model of gravity might generalize the current paradigm.
  • Assessing the consistency of the physical foundations of the model of cosmology by challenging fundamental assumptions adopted in cosmological inferences, in order to secure the conceptual basis of the paradigm used in interpreting cosmological observations.
