This is a \htmladdnormallink{CIMPA}{http://math-doc.ujf-grenoble.fr/CIMPA}
school. The first CIMPA school devoted to geometry (commutative or not),
operator algebras and theoretical physics was held in Saint Fran\c cois
(Guadeloupe) in 1993. One of the purposes of the present school is to
introduce the participants to the main aspects of the theory of quantum
groups (Hopf algebras) and their applications in theoretical physics and
mathematics. All the lectures can fit under the general title of ``Quantum
symmetries''.

\bigskip

\noindent
{\bf Keywords:} Hopf algebras, quantum groups, C* algebras, subfactors,
quantum differential calculus, quantum integrable systems, conformal field
theory.

\section{Schedule}
\begin{itemize}
\item
  We shall have three lectures of two hours everyday, four hours in the
  morning and two in the late afternoon.
\item
  It is too early to know the precise schedule of lectures. However the timing
  will be more or less the following: lectures will start every day at 8:30 am
  and stop at 1 pm, with a 30 minutes break.
  Most of the afternoon will be free but there will be a last lecture from
  6:30 to 8:30 pm. Note: it is anyway almost
  impossible to get a dinner before 9 pm in the area.
\item
  As a rule, each lecturer will deliver courses of six hours splitted in
  three lectures of two hours. Usually the three talks of every lecturer will
  be given during three consecutive (working) days.
\item
  Since we have nine lecturers, this makes 54 hours and therefore 9 days of
  lectures, 6 hours a day. For this reason, there will be lectures every day
  during the first week (Monday 10 to Friday 15) but we shall start only on
  Tuesday the second week (Tuesday 19 to Friday 22). This extended weekend
  of three days	should allow the interested foreign visitors to participate
  in one of the many possible excursions that are possible within this
  part of Patagonia (many such excursions require usually two full days).
\end{itemize}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

\section{Location}
\begin{itemize}
\item
  The lectures will take place within the
  \htmladdnormallink{Centro At\'omico Bariloche}{http://www.cab.cnea.gov.ar}.
  The CAB is located 10 kilometers away from the center of the city of
  Bariloche.
\item
  \htmladdnormallink{San Carlos de Bariloche}
     {http://www.cab.cnea.gov.ar/Bariloche/bari_english.htm} is situated in
  Argentina\latexhtml{,}{ (see \htmladdnormallink{map}{map-arg.gif}),} about
  1600 km south-west from Buenos Aires, within one of the most important
  national parks of Patagonia, the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Nahuel Huapi
  is also the name of the lake along which the village was built.
\item
  This part of Patagonia is a wild country of lakes, forests and mountains.
  However there are desert lands very near, and the Pacific ocean (Chilean
  side) is only 100 km away. There are available a number of recreational
  activities typical of mountain resorts like hiking, biking, horse riding,
  sailing on several of the area's lakes, etc.
\end{itemize}

\paragraph{Weather}

The weather in this region during January is mostly sunny, usually very dry,
sometimes windy with occasional thunderstorms. Temperatures range from 8 C
to 30 C. The altitude of the town above sea level is about 800 m.

\section{Housing}
\label{s:housing}
\begin{itemize}
\item
  The Centro At\'omico Bariloche contains a number of rooms that will be
  free at that time (because of summer hollidays in the austral hemisphere).
  These rooms, as a rule, are units that contain two beds and one bathroom
  and they turn out to be rather cheap: a contribution of $\$4$ a day will
  be asked (by the CAB) for each room. However, it is to be expected that
  there will not be enough of them for everybody. This meeting being a
  school and, in particular a CIMPA school ---see
  \hyperref{this link}{section}{}{s:cimpa}--- it is clear that priority
  will be given to students (doctoral or post doctoral students), and more
  particularly to those students coming from latino-american countries.
  For those room assignments, priority will also be given to those who are
  willing to share their room with another participant.

\item
  Participants who will not be housed within the CAB, either because they
  could not be accepted (for lack of space) or for other reasons, will be
  housed within a hotel situated at a walking distance from the CAB (15
  minutes), along the lake. Cost will be around $\$25$ for a single room
  (breakfast included). For a double, it would be\ldots the double. There
  are rooms with three or four beds (for those coming with their family).
  Of course the prices will be discussed again and made more precise when
  the time of the school comes near. Reservations should be made enough
  time in advance (three months) and some percentage of the payment will
  be required, ahead of time, by the hotel (this can be made with
  virtually any kind of credit card).

\item
  There are many other possibilities of housing in this area, from small
  bungalows ---or tents--- within the woods to four stars hotels within
  the village, and with prices ranging from almost nothing to $\$150$.
  Renting a bungalow (about $\$80$ a day) may also be a convenient solution
  for a family. As a rule, organizers will help with priority those
  participants who accept to be housed within the CAB or within the
  previously mentioned hotel. For housing questions, please contact
  us by email: \email{b2000@cabtep2.cnea.gov.ar}{b2000@cabtep2.cnea.gov.ar}.

\end{itemize}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\section{Food}
\begin{itemize}
\item
  Breakfast can be taken at the CAB cafeteria for those people housed at
  the CAB. Others may take it at their hotel.

\item
  Lunch will be served everyday at the CAB cafeteria (modic price,
  around $\$4$).

\item
  Dinner is not served at the CAB. There are several possibilities for
  eating in one of the restaurants located in the area (15 minutes walk).
  Prices are around $\$10$. Of course there are many other possibilities
  --for instance sandwiches, etc.-- in the village itself, $10$ kilometers
  away. Several regular buses (lines 10, 20, 21) run until late at night
  and, if needed, they are taxis or ``remis'' (private taxis) at any time.
\end{itemize}

\section{Travel}

\subsection{Flights and costs}

Typically, your trip will involve two parts: the first between you home
institute and Buenos Aires, the second between Buenos Aires and Bariloche.
There are two cases:

\begin{itemize}
\item
  First case: you plan to stop over in Buenos Aires and to go directly
  from there to Bariloche (and back); in other words, you do not have any other
  touristic plans in Argentina. In this situation, you have a rather large
  choice of airlines that can bring you to the argentinian capital city. You
  should be able to buy a round trip ticket around January 8 or 9 for a price
  approx. equal to
  $\$1000$ (from Europe), $\$800$ (from Miami) and less if you are already in
  South America. Participants willing to come from Australia, New Zealand or
  Japan probably already know that there exists a ``transpolar'' connection
  Sydney-Buenos Aires on \htmladdnormallink{Aerol\'\i neas Argentinas}
  {http://www.aerolineas.com.ar}, with stops in New Zealand and Ushuaia
  (or R\'\i o Gallegos).

  The round trip Buenos Aires - Bariloche can then be obtained separately for
  a price of approx. $\$300$ but tickets at $\$200$ can be found if booked
  sufficently in advance.

\item
  Second case: you plan not only to come to Bariloche but also to travel
  around in Argentina before or after the school and go to remote places in
  the extreme north or south of the country. In that case you should take
  into account the fact that individual tickets are quite expensive. The most
  economic choice, then, would be to get a Visit Argentina Pass, something
  that you can only buy outside of Argentina. The point is that, in such a
  case you have to enter the country with
  \htmladdnormallink{Aerol\'\i neas Argentinas}{http://www.aerolineas.com.ar}
  or an affiliated airline like \htmladdnormallink{Iberia}{http://www.iberia.es}.
  Those last two companies are not necessarily the cheapest ones, as far as
  the the international flight is concerned but they allow you to get this
  pass; its present cost is $\$440$, consisting in a set of four flights,
  anywhere within the country, (this means practically two round trips since
  most flights start from Buenos Aires). Moreover, additional coupons can be
  gotten, within the country, at a price of approx. $\$100$. Here are a few
  round trip averaged prices, just for you to compare: BsAs-Iguaz\'u
  $2\times\$120$, BsAs-Salta $2\times\$140$, BsAs-Trelew
  (Pen\'\i nsula Valdez) $2\times\$100$, BsAs-Bariloche $2\times\$150$,
  BsAs-Ushuaia $2\times\$200$.
\end{itemize}

\subsubsection*{Reaching Bariloche}

Of course, Bariloche can be reached by plane form Buenos Aires. The companies
operating this route are
\htmladdnormallink{Aerol\'\i neas Argentinas}{http://www.aerolineas.com.ar},
\htmladdnormallink{Austral}{http://www.austral.com.ar} (actually, a subsidiary
of Aeorol\'\i neas Argentinas), \htmladdnormallink{LAPA}{http://www.lapa.com.ar}
(a partner member of United Airlines/Star Alliance frequent flyer program), and
some others with smaller planes. As we already said, the typical price for a
round trip is $\$300$, but tickets at $\$200$ can be found booking in advance.

\paragraph{Other ways of reaching Bariloche}

\begin{itemize}
\item
  Bariloche can be reached by bus from many towns in Argentina, and from
  Puerto Mont, in Chile. Typical price for a round trip ticket from Buenos
  Aires, by bus, is $\$150$. The trip takes about 20 hours (one way).

\item
  Bariloche can also be reached by boat (yes!) from Puerto Mont, in Chile.
  About $\$100$, one day trip, and spectacular. Of course you have to find
  some way to go to Puerto Mont first!
\end{itemize}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\subsection{Planning your trip}

{\bf Problems of booking:}
As you know our school starts on monday, January 10, 2000.
It is not too difficult, provided it is done with enough anticipation, to get
so called ``negociated round trip tickets'' at reasonable prices, by going to
some travel agency. It is clear that your projects may still change, therefore
you should try to find a travel agency that will not ask you to pay
immediately. Those of you who are not yet totally sure to come
should nevertheless try to make reservations as soon as possible (without
paying anything) just in order to avoid potential problems concerning booking:
we know, by experience, that this is not a trivial problem.

Typically, the cost Europe-Buenos Aires is about $\$900$ or $\$1000$ (for
January 2000), but such tickets are probably going to be increasingly difficult
to get: the ``regular price'' for such a round-trip flight from Europe, at that
time of the year, can be in the range $\$3000$-$\$4000$ (yes!), and there are
not so many tickets sold at $1000$. Of course, it is also true that, if you
wait till the last minute (less than two weeks before departure) to purchase
your ticket, you may find prices as low as $\$700$, for exactly the same
flight. Such low prices can be found for instance on the web, but this
possibility is quite hazardous, and you certainly cannot bet on it.

If you plan to come before the school (either at the end of December or during
the first few days of January) making reservations on the international flights
can turn out to be a hard task: there will be very few tickets at cheap prices
and you really have to book them as soon as possible.

The school takes place at the beginning of the austral summer, this is the
beginning of the vacation period and many people from Argentina will travel.
Bariloche, in particular, is a quite a favorite place; this means that your
flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche should {\sl also} be booked a long
time in advance.

If you decide to travel in Argentina, it is wise to decide to do it after the
school rather than before; indeed, prices will be cheaper and there will be
more available seats in the planes.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any specific
question. We want you in Bariloche on the 10th of January and are ready to
help.

\paragraph{WARNING --End of June 99-- WARNING:} Due to the fact that
Christmas holydays will be quite special, this year (``year 2000''), the
company Aerolineas Argentinas decided recently to exceptionally suppress the
possibility of buying the ``Visit Argentina'' pass during the whole period
starting December 20 and ending January 9. Would such an unfortunate decision
be maintained, it would certainly prevent many of you to travel around, in
Argentina, at least {\sl before} the school. Such a decision being actually
quite inpopular, it may very well be that people of the company will change
again their mind and their politics\ldots

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\subsection{Visas}

Please do not forget to inquire about visas enough time in advance. Citizens
from many west-european and american countries do not need visas for entering
Argentina as tourists, but you should check this with your local argentinian
consulate.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\subsection{Travel related information}

\subsubsection*{Inside Buenos Aires}

Most participants (apart from the local ones) will certainly land at Buenos
Aires' international airport (Ezeiza) first. Domestic flights take off from
another airport (Aeroparque Jorge Newery), located 40km away along the R\'\i o
de La Plata river and very near the center of Buenos Aires. So you will surely
need to transfer between both airports. We do not advise visitors to take a taxi
in Ezeiza. It is preferable to either take one of the small buses of the company
\htmladdnormallink{Manuel Tienda Le\'on}{http://www.tiendaleon.com.ar}, or to
take a ``remise'' (a sort of non-luxury limousine service with pre-arranged
fare). Cost of the bus is about $\$15$, and a direct transfer Ezeiza-Aeroparque
takes about 1 hour (but you should allow for a waiting time, and slowings in the
traffic, so perhaps 2 hours is a better number to be sure of not missing the
flight). This same company also does connecting trips between both airports and
the center of Buenos Aires (streets
\htmladdnormallink{Santa F\'e and Esmeralda}{map-ba.gif}).

\subsubsection*{Currency and cash availability}

The argentinian currency is the peso. The present exchange rate is
1 peso = 1 US\$. Due to the economic system adopted since 1990, US\$ are
accepted as well as local currency everywhere. Therefore, it is convenient
to simply bring US\$ with you. Credit cards are widely spread and many
automated tellers are linked to major international networks like
Cirrus/MasterCard and Visa/Plus.

\subsubsection*{Telephone calls}

Most major international calling cards (AT\&T,MCI,etc.) can be used for calls
from private phones, but this service is not yet available from public ones.
At present, there are two major (private) phone companies operating in
Argentina: \htmladdnormallink{Telef\'onica de Argentina}
{http://www.telefonica.com.ar} and \htmladdnormallink{Telecom Argentina}
{http://www.telecom.com.ar}. To call from a public phone one should use a
calling card available in most newstands and kiosks everywhere. Cost of the
cards range from 6 US\$ to 20 US\$ and enable the user to call from telephone
booths of any of both companies. One may also call from some stores, known as
``locutorios'' which have several phone booths inside. They have the extra
convenience of not having to worry about the lifetime of a calling card. Most
stores display the actual fare on a display while you are making the phone call.

The international telephone code for Argentina is 54. The city code for
Bariloche is 2944 and the one for Buenos Aires is 11. Also you should know that
a 0 prefix is needed for non-local calls inside Argentina, and that you should
type 00 to make an international call. For instance, you would type
0 2944 445126 to call R. Trinchero from any phone in Buenos Aires, or even any
city in Argentina oustide Bariloche.

\section{Financial support and candidatures}
\begin{itemize}
\item
  All candidatures should be sent to CIMPA (see the address
  \hyperref{here}{in section~}{}{s:cimpa-address}). Please,
  print and fill in the \hyperref{application form}{application form (see
  section~}{)}{s:app-form}, and send it together with the documents there
  requested.

\item
  Independently of the \hyperref{housing facilities}{housing facilities
  (see section~}{)}{s:housing} offered by the Centro At\'omico Bariloche, there
  will be available some ---limited--- financial support, including support
  for travel expenses, coming from different sources, and handled by the
  directors of the school. Potential participants should first look for
  financial help within their own home institutions. If this fails they
  should ask for advise from one of the members of the organizing committee.
  If everything else fails they can get in touch directly with one of the
  directors of the school.

\item
  Candidates should specify in their application letter the kind of financial
  support that they could get apart from the potential one provided by the
  school. Although things can certainly be modified at a later stage,
  potential participants should clearly state their preferences about
  lodging (CAB shared room, hotel\ldots). Those who think that they will come
  with a spouse (or family) are also asked to say so. Organizers need indeed
  to know some time in advance the number of rooms that they will have to
  reserve in an hotel in the neighbourhood.

\item
  The lecture hall offered by the CAB is quite big\ldots ~so size is not
  an issue. However, the number of participants will be limited by the housing
  facilities and by the wish of the organizers who want to keep the size of
  the school reasonable.

\item
  The deadline for applications is October 29, 1999. Participants should
  certainly not wait that long before sending their application. It is
  indeed to be expected that most available fellowships will be attributed
  by then. Of course there are exceptions: fellowships offered by some
  institutions may not be made official before the end of 1999. This should
  not prevent the interested people to send their application to CIMPA
  while explicitly mentionning that they expect to receive some kind of
  financial support at a later stage.

\item
  Participants from some countries will need some kind of ``official''
  letter of invitation in order to be able to ask for a financial support
  from their own home institutions. Such letters can directly be obtained
  from the \hyperref{directors}{directors~}{}{s:directors} of the school.
\end{itemize}

\section{Miscellaneous}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\subsection{Posters}

Registered participants will receive a copy of the poster advertizing the
school Bariloche 2000. If you do not plan to come to the school yourself,
but nevertheless you want to receive one copy of such a poster in order to
display it in your institute, please get in touch with one of the
\hyperref{organizers}{organizers (see~}{)}{s:addresses}.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\subsection{School versus conference}

This is a school, not a conference. The two weeks of the school will be
mostly taken by the lectures. Of course, there will be some time, ``after
hours'', or during the otherwise ``free'' time, to organize informal talks,
and some participants should be able to speak about their own work. However,
these activities will be usually organized by the interested participants
themselves, and in any case, at a later stage.
