About Observatoire de Haute-Provence (in brief)

The Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP) is an astronomical observatory located at Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire, near Forcalquier and Manosque, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (France). Since February 8, 2017, it is registered as part of historical monuments.

Such a place has been chosen because of purity of the atmosphere in the area of Forcalquier. While the Image Quality at OHP is not excellent, the number of nights used for photometry is exceptional.

For early arrival

For an early arrival, several cities offer a specific interest for a stopover depending on your constraints.

Provence countrysides and Alpes de Haute Provence offer a rather large choice of places to visit by their stories, villages and terroirs. For a cheap lunch stop with a good quality/price ratio, do not hesitate to choose among the places benefiting from the label "bistrot de pays".

Marseille

Founded in 600 BC by Ionian Greeks from Phocaea, Marseille (Massalia) is the oldest city in France. It is the first French port and a cosmopolitan city of cultural and economic exchanges with Southern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. These cultures are also reflected in the culinary flavors of traditional restaurants to discover, not to mention the emblematic dish “la bouillabaisse”. A stroll along the quay of the “vieux port” toward the horizon to discover at the starboard the architecture of the “Mucem" and its exhibitions, as well as those of the “Vielle charité”, drowned in the old town “Le Panier”, then sit in one of the restaurants of the place, will transform an afternoon into a pleasant moment.

Aix en Provence

Founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who gave his name to its springs, Aix-en-Provence (Aquae Sextiae), is nowaday a small and pleasant town where students enjoy to live. It is nice to walk around this city where everything is within walking distance, most of museums. The neighborhoods themselves bear witness to their history by their architectural style and the names of their streets. In the past, craftsmen lived on one side of the “Cours Mirabeau” and the notables on the other, what explains the streets names. Paul Cézanne, French artist and post-impressionist painter, lived there and his paintings of the “Sainte Victoire” maked this moutain emblematic.

Manosque

Churches, cathedrals, basilicas and chapels are places to visit in Manosque, in addition to the market that keeps the tradition of Provencal markets in the heart of city centers and old towns. It is an explosion of colors, smells and sounds, drowned by an endless stream of pedestrians mixing. Manosquins come to stock up and tourists swim in this typical and friendly atmosphere.
