TITLE Can the energy principle for MHD stability of flowing plasma be improved? AUTHOR Victor ILGISONIS ABSTRACT Well-known drawback of the energy principle for flowing plasma consists in a rather large gap between sufficient stability condition resulted from the principle and necessary stability conditions derived for concrete modes. The most suitable form of the principle obtained by Ilgisonis & Pastukhov in 1996 by use of the Noether theorem was then re-confirmed by Hameiri, who used both the approach of direct calculations of invariants (1998) and the Hamiltonian method of dynamically accessible perturbations (2003). In the present report, a possibility for further improvement of the principle is discussed for linearized MHD dynamics. Having been taken into account, the extra invariants inherent in the linearized dynamics are shown to restrict the accessible perturbations and to result effectively in more soft stability condition.
