Modeling the social dynamics of contagion and innovation using dynamical processes on complex topologies

Iacopo Iacopini (Queen Mary University of London)

The study of dynamical processes on complex networks is a well-established branch of complex systems science that aims at understanding the complex interplay between the dynamics of the process and the topology of the underlying network. In this talk, I will present two different models of social dynamics that make use of this particular interplay for modeling processes of social contagion and processes of innovation.

I will start by considering individuals and their -group- interactions as a structure for the propagation of ideas and behaviors. With this in mind, I will present a model of simplicial social contagion [1], showing how the inclusion of these high-order group interactions can alter the spreading dynamics and lead to the emergence of new phenomena. In the second part of the talk, I will consider the relationships between the ideas/concepts and shift the attention to their discovery dynamics from the point of view of the individuals. I will finally reproduce the empirically observed dynamics of correlated novelties by using a model of edge-reinforced random walks on a network of links among ideas and concepts [2].
