Chiral Perturbation Theory : Tools, Tricks and Results in Low-Energy QCD

Mathias Sjö (Department de physique théorique et d'astronomie, Université de Lund, Suède)

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), one of the cornerstones of our current understanding of the fundamental nature of the Universe, is infamously ill-behaved at energies around and below the mass of the proton. There, a number of new approaches must be taken in order to regain theoretical traction, and among the foremost of these is Chiral Perturbation Theory, a low-energy effiective field theory. It is a cumbersome theory, but it can nevertheless be coaxed into producing precision results for direct application to experiments, or in symbiosis with other methods such as Lattice QCD. I introduce Chiral Perturbation Theory in a nutshell, and give a brief tour of some recent results. I also highlight interesting mathematical features that emerge, both at the big-picture level and amidst the laborious work of explicitly calculating its amplitudes. (The covered work has been done in collaboration with B. Alvarez, J. Bijnens, K. Kampf and T. Husek.)
