I will show that the Casimir energy is the trace of a
spectrally defined operator. This point of view allows to treat the
Casimir effect without any infinities and also gives rise to a full
mathematical proof that various definitions and approaches in the
literature are equivalent. I will also give an overview of computability
of the Casimir effect.
