Ph.D. position in gravitational waves and cosmology at Aix-Marseille University (France) - Deadline June 7th, 2024

The Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT) at the Aix-Marseille University in Marseille (France) invites applications for one Ph.D. position in gravitational-wave astronomy/cosmology.

The successful candidate will join a newly established research program led by Dr. Michele Mancarella and funded by the Fondation A*Midex Initiative of Excellence Grant “Cosmology and Astrophysics with Gravitational waves and Galaxy surveys” (COSMOAGG). Specific interests will be focussed on gravitational-wave cosmology, large-scale inference techniques for gravitational-wave astronomy, and next-generation gravitational-wave experiments.

Ideal candidates will have a Master’s degree in Physics or related discipline, good programming skills, interest and/or previous experience in late-time cosmology, gravitational-wave population studies and bayesian inference, applications of machine learning techniques, though we are open to all candidates with a strong background in gravitational-wave physics, multi-messenger astronomy, and cosmology. There will be opportunities of interaction and participation to the activities of the Virgo collaboration and to the Einstein Telescope Observational Science Board.

The Ph.D program lasts for 3 years with starting date in autumn 2024 (ideally October 1st). Research and travel resources as well as relocation expenses will be guaranteed. The monthly net salary is of ~1600 EUR.

The recruit will join the CPT's cosmology team, which consists of five permanent staff whose research focuses on theoretical cosmology, dark energy and modified gravity, the large-scale structure of the universe, and gravitational waves, and have access to data from the Euclid space mission and from the LIGO-Virgo collaboration. Four postdoctoral researchers specialising in gravitational-wave cosmology and theory will join the team in autumn 2024.

Marseille is a warm, beautiful mediterranean city in the heart of the worldwide famous Provence. The CPT is located in the Luminy Campus, at the gates of the Calanques National Park, a terrestrial and marine natural wonder for climbing, snorkelling and hiking.

Applications consists in a CV, a transcript of the Master’s grades, a motivation letter, and a two-pages long description of the work done for the final year’s Master project (and, if applicable, of other relevant research experiences), to be sent in a single pdf file at mancarella@cpt.univ-mrs.fr with email subject “PhD application - NAME OF THE CANDIDATE”. Candidates should also arrange for one reference letter from the supervisor of the Master’s project to be sent separately by the application deadline to the same address, including in the email subject “PhD reference letter - NAME OF THE CANDIDATE”. Additional reference letters are welcome but not mandatory.

The application deadline is June 7th, 2024, though we will consider applications until the positions are filled. Interviews will take place shortly after the deadline.

We particularly welcome expressions of interest from traditionally underrepresented groups.
